A survey from lights by TENA has revealed that more women suffer from incontinence and light bladder leakage than hay fever. It is twice as common as hay fever in women. TENA found that 54 per cent of ladies in the UK experience bladder weakness, making it twice as common as hay fever, which only 27 per cent suffer from on a regular basis. They also found that light bladder weakness is experienced by so many that it is even more common than everyday ailments including coughs (18 per cent), colds (20 per cent) and sore throats (16 per cent).It is three times more likely to occur than conditions like eczema and mouth ulcers, which are experienced by 13 per cent of British ladies. So what are the affects of bladder weakness? Bladder weakness also prevents one in 10 women from carrying out their usual routine, with 41 per cent neglecting their social lives because of it. It is also one of the biggest worry for pregnant women, with 28 per cent fretting over light bladder weakness. TENA brand manager, Sian Dixon says “With so many women in the UK admitting they experience light bladder weakness, it’s a shame to see that a large proportion still feel they need to keep this a secret,” “We hope that by showing women how common this is, we can inspire them to open up and break the stigma.” Despite bladder weakness being so common, women are still reluctant to tackle the issue, with 30 per cent finding it embarrassing to talk about and over half labelling it as a taboo subject. TENA’s poll also revealed that women are so ashamed that one in five are turning to unsuitable sanitary protection to avoid buying incontinence products.
