World Toilet Day & International Men’s Day 19th November 2014

Did you know that November 19th is World Toilet Day and International Men’s Day?

World Toilet Day 2014

World Toilet DayWorld Toilet Day is co-ordinated by the World Toilet Organization to increase awareness of the global sanitation crisis. The ‘silent’ sanitation crisis is a ticking time bomb, which affects billions of people around the world. When the World Toilet Organization was founded in 2001 the organisation’s approach of mixing humour with serious facts resonated with people around the world. By designating a special day to celebrate the importance of toilets in our lives This years World Toilet Day is sponsored by Domestos (Uniliver) and they are encouraging people to tweet #wecantwait to help improve sanitation. Here in the UK we blessed enough to have a clean place to go to the toilet, which is important for people with incontinence who have to make regular trips to the toilet. However 2.5 billion people do not have access to a clean or safe toilet. So we encourage you to get involved anyway you can.

International Men’s Day 2014

International Men's DayThe aim of International Men's Day is to focus on men's health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. It is an occasion for men to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular their contributions to community, family, marriage, and childcare while highlighting the discrimination against them. There are many events to mark International Men's Day including public seminars, conferences, festivals and fundraisers, classroom activities at schools, radio and television programs, Church observances, and peaceful displays and marches. The theme this year is ‘Positive Male Role Models’. Here at Incontinence UK we encourage you to get involved in today’s International Men’s Day if possible. Although most of our products are unisex, we also have some specific products just for men. The loss of bladder control is relatively common among men with studies estimating that 5 to 15% of men living at home above the age of 60, and 2 to 15 % of men between the ages of 15 to 64, are affected by incontinence. Amongst younger men, the incontinence is often related to prostate cancer surgery, with about 50% of men who undergo prostate removal surgery experiencing leakage of urine during the first six weeks after surgery. At the end of the first year post surgery, about 20% will continue having a significant problem with leakage or stress incontinence. As men age, the prostate gland grows. It is estimated that around 60% of men who are aged 60 or over have some degree of prostate enlargement.
