How To Reduce The Embarrassment of Having Incontinence While At Work

We know that suffering from incontinence can be embarrassing at times, especially in the work place. However there are solutions to reduce the embarrassment and minimise the interference while at work. Below are a list of things you can do if and where possible. Reduce your liquid intake Whilst at work most of us continuously sip on tea, coffee or water all day. However the more our bladder is full the more likely you are to leak or have an accident. It is advised to drink no more than 3 or 4 glasses of liquids at work, and limit caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, which makes your body produce more urine. When you get home you can then increase your liquid intake. Plan your bathroom visits It is a good idea where possible to plan your bathroom visits in order to empty your bladder to avoid problems. If possible, gradually add 15 minutes to the amount of time between bathroom visits. This will train you to hold urine for long meetings. However you will need to act on any feelings of urgency. Build your muscle Flexing and releasing your pelvic floor muscles will help to prevent leaks. This exercise is called a Kegel. You can literally do them anywhere, in your car, on the bus or even at your desk at work! Some people leak when they stand up. To prevent this, squeeze pelvic floor muscles as you stand. This exercise can also help you reduce a strong urge to urinate. Quickly tense and relax the muscles several times. Wear Dark Clothes If you're concerned your colleagues might see wet spots on your clothing, wear dark colours to work that won't show the contrast between wet and dry fabric. This tactic however should be a safety net rather than a solution to your problem.
