Dementia Awareness Week 15th - 21st May 16
This week is Dementia Awareness Week (#DAW2016) and Incontinence UK and the Alzheimer’s Society are encouraging anyone who is worried about dementia to confront their concerns and get in touch with the Alzheimer's Society. Hundreds of thousands of families are touched by dementia every year and many people don't know where to turn. We know dementia can be scary but you don’t have to face it alone.- Dementia is different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function. This is caused when the brain is damaged such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes. Over 850,000 people in the UK currently have dementia.
- Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. These conditions are usually progressive and means the symptoms will gradually get worse.
- Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62% of those diagnosed.
- Other types of dementia include vascular dementia affecting 17% of those diagnosed and mixed dementia affecting 10% of those diagnosed.
