Tips For Dealing With Continence Issues When Away From Home

Carry on! If you suffer from incontinence problems then it doesn't have to interrupt your home or work life. Simple steps and planning make a huge difference. We know that living with incontinence is especially hard away from home.  Here are some good tips for coping when at work, at the gym, on holiday or staying with family and friends. Planning
  • Limit liquids - try to keep you bladder empty. If it’s full, it is more likely to leak.
  • Drink no more than 3 or 4 glasses of liquids when away from home and limit caffeine, which makes your body produce more urine.
  • "You can go a little thirsty when away from home and then drink more when at home," says Craig Comiter, MD, professor of urology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
  • Plan your toilet visits including where and when the next toilet will be - empty your bladder often to avoid problems.
  • Pack a bag with any incontinence products you need – never assure that you will be able to purchase what you need especially if you are going away on holiday and also useful for any unscheduled delays.
  • If staying overnight then you might want to think about taking some incontinence bed or chair protection.
Build Stamina
  • Flex and release your pelvic floor muscles to help prevent leaks.  There's no limit to how frequently you can do them, you can do them in a car, a bus, at your desk!
  • Some people leak when they stand up. To prevent this, squeeze your pelvic floor muscles as you stand. This exercise can also help you reduce a strong urge to urinate. Quickly tense and relax the muscles several times.
Wear Dark Comfortable Clothes
  • If you are concerned others might see wet spots on your clothing, wear dark colours that won't show the contrast between wet and dry fabric. This tactic should be a safety net, not a solution to your problem.
  • Also make sure that you are wearing comfortable clothing that will work easily in an unfamiliar toilet.   Try to focus on wearing clothing that will allow you to change your incontinence undergarment easily without have to completely undress in a public restroom.
  • If you hopefully might go swimming when on holiday then do take a look at our discreet incontinence swimwear range.
